Pinarello Asolo – Vintage Steel Road Bike – Campagnolo Athena – 1990s
History:
The prestigious frame manufactory Cicli Pinarello was founded in 1952 by Giovanni "Nani" Pinarello in Treviso, Northern Italy. From a small workshop, the brand rapidly ascended through masterful craftsmanship and rigorous racing development to become one of the most celebrated icons in international cycling. Following Fausto Bertoglio’s historic Giro d'Italia triumph in 1975 and subsequent Grand Tour victories by legends such as Pedro Delgado and Miguel Indurain, Pinarello cemented its legacy as the benchmark of Italian engineering and championship performance.
Description:
The Asolo model, named after the historic Venetian town near the company’s headquarters, was introduced by Pinarello as a high-performance road racer for dedicated amateurs and competitive riders. Frames of this era represent the peak of the classic Italian steel era prior to the widespread transition to aluminum and carbon.
This Pinarello Asolo is built on a precision-brazed Columbus Cromor tubeset made from cold-drawn, double-butted 25CrMo4 chrome-molybdenum steel. The tube dimensions deliver balanced ride characteristics, offering excellent torsional rigidity around the bottom bracket alongside dependable vibration damping across longer distances. Distinctive frame details include the crafted head tube lugs with pantographed Pinarello logos, a fully chromed Columbus fork, and a chromed drive-side chainstay. The finish features a distinctive petrol-metallic hue—an interplay of deep blue and emerald green—accentuated by gold decals and lettering.
The mechanical build centers on a Campagnolo Athena 9-speed groupset from the late 1990s. The polished aluminum finish of the components complements the classic Italian aesthetic. Shifting and braking are managed via ergonomic Campagnolo Athena Ergopower levers, which actuate the 9-speed rear derailleur and front mech with precision. The aero-profile seatpost also comes from the Athena line, paired with a classic riveted Selle San Marco Regal saddle. The hand-built wheelset pairs Campagnolo Chorus hubs with French Mavic Reflex SUP UB Control double-wall rims made from Maxtal alloy, with a champagne-gold anodized finish that matches the gold accents on the frame. The cockpit is completed by a classic 3TTT setup consisting of a 3TTT quill stem and a 3TTT Forma drop handlebar.
Condition:
Used. The road bike is in well-maintained condition and has undergone a complete mechanical overhaul in our workshop at Goldensteelcycles. The bicycle was fully stripped down, thoroughly cleaned, and professionally rebuilt. The Columbus Cromor steel frame is structurally sound and completely free of cracks, dents, bends, or structural flaws. The chrome plating on the fork and chainstay retains a clean shine. The petrol-metallic paint finish was deeply cleaned and sealed with a protective Carnauba hard wax coating. All Campagnolo Athena components were degreased, freshly lubricated, and precisely tuned; the 9-speed Ergopower levers shift crisply and accurately. Every bearing assembly—including the bottom bracket, headset, and Campagnolo Chorus hubs—was stripped, cleaned, repacked with fresh grease, and adjusted play-free. The bike is fully ready to ride.
