Reus – Vintage Steel Road Bike – Columbus SLX – Shimano Dura-Ace 7700 – 1990s
History:
Behind the Reus marque stands one of the most revered names in Dutch bespoke framebuilding: the workshop of Jan Reus in Zwanenburg, North Holland. Beginning in the 1970s, Jan Reus developed a legendary reputation as a true master at the torch, tailoring high-performance steel frames with extraordinary precision. National champions, criterion specialists, and six-day track racers routinely turned to Zwanenburg for machines celebrated for their exceptional rigidity and unflinching directional stability.
In tribute to this rich Dutch cycling heritage and competitive success, Reus adorned select premier frames in a striking Rood-Wit-Blauw livery. Every hand-brazed chassis featured tailored tube mitering, intricately filed lug cutouts, and race-proven geometry. To this day, original Reus steel racers from Zwanenburg are cherished by connoisseurs as rare, masterfully executed examples of traditional Dutch artisanal craftsmanship.
Description:
Dating from the 1990s, this Reus road bike is built around the iconic Columbus SLX tubeset. The double-butted Cyclex steel features internal helical reinforcements at critical junctions, ensuring superb torsional stiffness around the bottom bracket shell. The paint scheme proudly showcases the Dutch national colors: pure white is complemented by deep metallic red and vibrant metallic blue across the head tube, seatstay caps, and bottom bracket. Authentic competition-grade details—such as the brazed-on race number holder under the top tube, the engraved "R" on the upper head lug, distinctive Reus pantographs on the bottom bracket shell, internal top-tube brake routing, and fully chromed rear stays with chromed dropouts—emphasize its thoroughbred racing pedigree.
The bike is outfitted with a matching 9-speed Shimano Dura-Ace 7700 groupset. Dura-Ace STI shift-brake levers actuate the front and rear derailleurs with swift precision, while the Dual-Pivot calipers provide dependable braking modulation. Forward drive is powered by a Mavic Aksium Race wheelset with straight-pull bladed spokes, fitted with Michelin Dynamic Sport tires sporting clean white sidewalls. Up front, a 3ttt Status quill stem clamps an ergonomic 3ttt Forma SL alloy handlebar. The color-matched tricolor bar tape harmonizes seamlessly with the frame's finish, neatly pulling the entire Dutch aesthetic together. A clean white Ritchey Comp saddle provides the finishing touch.
Condition:
Pre-owned. The road bike presents in very attractive, well-maintained condition following a complete restoration and detailed mechanical overhaul in the Goldensteelcycles workshop. The Columbus SLX steel frame is properly aligned, structurally sound, straight, and entirely free of cracks or dents. The original paintwork and all chrome surfaces on the frame and fork have been deep-cleaned, machine-polished to a high shine, and sealed with protective wax.
During the overhaul, all mechanical components of the Shimano Dura-Ace group were disassembled, ultrasonically cleaned, degreased, freshly lubricated, and calibrated. The Dura-Ace headset and bottom bracket were thoroughly serviced, packed with fresh grease, and tuned play-free. All essential consumable components—including the complete white cable routing, tires, and handlebar tape—were renewed during the build. A characterful, technically dialed racing machine with genuine competition pedigree, completely ready for the road.
