Atala Retro Road Bike - 1980s - Campagnolo Nuovo Record - Eroica Ready
History:
The Atala manufactory, founded in 1907 by Angelo Gatti in Milan, is a cornerstone of Italian cycling identity. The brand made history as early as 1909, when Luigi Ganna won the very first Giro d’Italia on an Atala. For decades, the company operated not just as a constructor but as one of the most successful and enduring professional racing teams in the peloton. Technically, Atala was distinguished by its immense expertise in material processing: a particular focus was placed on thermal management during the brazing of the lug connections. By precisely controlling the heat, the crystalline structure of the steel was preserved, granting the frames superior fatigue strength and structural stability. The Record series always represented the technical flagship, optimized for handling and reliability under the rigorous conditions of professional racing. Riders like Vito Taccone conquered the passes of the Alps and Dolomites on these light blue machines, solidifying the brand's reputation as a dependable partner in high-mountain terrain.
Description:
This Atala Record from around 1980 is an impressive testament to Italian frame-building artistry in its original state. The bike stands out due to its homogeneous equipment, featuring a complete Campagnolo Nuovo Record groupset. While the Super Record was known as the lightweight variant, the Nuovo Record remained the undisputed standard for reliability in the professional peloton for over two decades. The groupset includes all mechanical components—from the rear and front derailleurs and the iconic crankset to the brakes, levers, shifters, and the finely adjustable seatpost. The consistent build without a mix of components underlines the high collector value of this classic. The setup is complemented by a contemporary Cinelli cockpit as well as Fiamme rims on Campagnolo Record hubs. In its striking light blue finish, this Atala embodies the technical aesthetic of an era when steel and aluminum dominated the world of cycling.
Condition:
Used. This Atala is in a very well-maintained and authentic state of preservation. At our Goldensteelcycles workshop, the bike underwent a comprehensive overhaul to fully restore the mechanical precision of its original state. To achieve this, the bike was completely disassembled into its individual parts; all components of the Campagnolo Nuovo Record groupset were pre-cleaned by hand and then deeply serviced in an ultrasonic bath. All bearings were professionally maintained, treated with fresh lubricants, and re-adjusted for optimal performance. The frame is structurally flawless, showing no cracks, dents, or misalignment. The original light blue paintwork has been carefully refurbished and preserved with a high-quality hard wax sealant to safeguard the substance for the long term. Through the replacement of all relevant wear parts with high-quality components, the bike is in excellent technical condition and offers a first-class, reliable riding experience.
