History:

The Brands brand is deeply connected to the rich cycling culture of Amsterdam. The company was founded by Jan Brands, a passionate mechanic and frame builder who earned an outstanding reputation in the Dutch capital starting from the mid-20th century. The specialized shop and its accompanying workshop in Amsterdam quickly developed into a landmark institution for both amateur and professional cyclists in the region.

Brands was well known for making zero compromises regarding material selection. To ensure maximum performance in demanding racing conditions, the workshop relied on premium Italian tubesets from Columbus, which were crafted with great attention to detail in the Netherlands. The frames were characterized by their typically agile, Dutch geometry and superb stiffness characteristics. Over decades, Brands supplied local racing teams and successful criterium riders, turning the brand into a true cult classic of Amsterdam's cycling history.

Description:

Dating back precisely to the years 1987 to 1988 based on its components and frame construction, this spectacular Brands road bike is a masterclass in vintage design. The technological heart is the legendary Columbus SLX top-tier Italian tubeset. This high-end tubeset features double-butted Cyclex steel tubing designed specifically for professional racing. The absolute highlight of the SLX set is hidden inside: the most heavily stressed zones—particularly around the bottom bracket shell and the lower ends of the seat and down tubes—are reinforced with five spiral ribs (helical reinforcements). These internal ridges massively increase torsional stiffness during hard accelerations without adding unnecessary weight to the frame.

The frame showcases masterful craftsmanship, including beautifully cast lugs, an elegantly shaped brake bridge, and filigree dropouts. Visually, the bicycle shines with its striking original metallic pink paint scheme and white Brands decals, perfectly contrasted by a fully chromed rear triangle (chainstays and seatstays) and a matching fully chromed Columbus fork.

The mechanical specification is an absolute rarity: a complete, period-correct Shimano Santé groupset (5000 series). Introduced by Shimano in late 1987, Santé was designed as a premium, fashion-forward groupset positioned just below Dura-Ace. Years ahead of its time visually, it features aerodynamically sculpted components finished in an elegant, pearl-white enamel coating. The build includes the Santé crankset, the Santé rear derailleur with its aerodynamic parallelogram, the matching front derailleur, and the SLR brake calipers. Shifting is operated traditionally via matching Santé down-tube shifters that click precisely into place using the Shimano Indexed System (SIS).

The entire build follows a strict aesthetic concept that beautifully complements the white accents of the design groupset. The cockpit features an exclusive Cinelli setup, consisting of a Cinelli handlebar with internal cable routing for an exceptionally clean look, paired with a custom-pantographed Brands stem. It is wrapped in white, perforated handlebar tape for a classic appearance and excellent grip, while perfectly color-matched white brake housings route the cables elegantly. A sporty Ritchey Comp saddle finishes the seating area. The wheelset combines the original Santé hubs with aerodynamic Wolber TX Profil rims of French manufacture, wrapped in Michelin Dynamic Sport clincher tires featuring white sidewalls that harmoniously round out the dual-tone aesthetic.

Condition:

Used. The road bike has undergone a complete mechanical overhaul in our Goldensteelcycles workshop, where it was entirely disassembled into its individual parts, cleaned in an ultrasonic bath, and rebuilt from the ground up. The Columbus SLX steel frame is in excellent structural condition, shows perfect alignment, and is absolutely free of cracks, dents, bends, or deformations. The original metallic pink paint finish is beautifully preserved and was manually treated with a protective hard wax sealant following the deep clean. All Shimano Santé components were carefully cleaned, freshly lubricated, and precisely tuned; the SIS indexing shifts flawlessly. Every single bearing assembly—namely the bottom bracket, the headset, and the hub bearings—was fully stripped down, cleaned, repacked with high-quality hub grease, and adjusted to run silky smooth without any play. The bicycle is fully ready to ride.
