Gios Compact Pro – Classic Steel Road Bicycle - Columbus Evolution – Campagnolo Chorus – 1990s
History:
Founded in 1948 by Tolmino Gios in Turin, the Gios brand stands as one of the unshakeable monuments of Italian frame-building artistry. Entering the professional racing scene quickly catapulted the workshop straight into the cycling Olympus. The international big bang occurred in 1973 through a partnership with the legendary Brooklyn professional team, spearheaded by the Flandrian powerhouse Roger De Vlaeminck. To stand out radically from competitors on the black-and-white television screens of the era, Gios created the unmistakable, deeply vibrant "Gios Blue"—a color that rapidly became a visual shorthand in the peloton for uncompromising aggressiveness, toughness, and perfection. De Vlaeminck hammered his blue Gios machines to four historic victories at the "Hell of the North" (Paris-Roubaix) and countless other monuments.
Yet, Gios was never just about paint—it represented a technological avant-garde. Legendary builders like Tolmino's son Alfredo Gios tirelessly drove the evolution of the steel frame. Among other feats, Gios revolutionized the market with pioneering lug solutions and set industry standards for shortening the rear triangle. In the late 1980s and 1990s, when this Compact Pro was conceived, the brand experienced a second golden professional era: the Spanish team Kelme, featuring climbing king Roberto Heras and sprinting legend Fernando Escartín, blindly relied on the steering precision and agility from Turin during the most brutal mountain stages of the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España. Riding a Gios always meant owning an uncompromising tool engineered for the harshest racing environments—a legacy that ensures the "Blue Wonder" an untouchable cult status to this day.
Description:
The Gios Compact Pro is widely considered by collectors to be one of the most technically sophisticated steel road bikes ever built. The heart of the frame is the patented "Gios Compact System"—adjustable, extremely compact rear dropouts that allow the rider to adjust the wheelbase down to the millimeter, fine-tuning the ride characteristics from stable to maximally agile. This masterpiece was crafted from the extremely rare and exclusive "Columbus Pro Evolution" tubeset, which guarantees phenomenal stiffness combined with classic ride comfort due to its specific tube profiles. The deep blue original paintwork is elegantly highlighted by the distinctive, fully chromed fork.
The componentry is a true highlight of mechanical evolution: shifting is modern and convenient via the beautifully sculpted first-generation Campagnolo Chorus Ergo-Power brake/shift levers with crisp 8-speed indexing. This groupset is paired with the absolute crown jewels of the era—a Campagnolo C-Record crankset and matching C-Record front derailleur, world-famous for their fluid, aerodynamic shapes. The cockpit features a premium 3TTT stem and handlebar combination, harmonizing perfectly with the original blue Gios handlebar tape. A matching Gios saddle sits atop a premium Campagnolo seatpost. This Italian racing machine is rounded off by a classic Alesa 913 wheelset, fitted with white Michelin Dynamic Sport tires that visually complement the white decals of the frame in a brilliant way.
Condition:
Used. This Gios Compact Pro is in an exceptionally well-maintained and authentic overall condition. During a comprehensive overhaul in the workshop of Goldensteelcycles, the road bike was completely disassembled and professionally rebuilt. The exclusive Columbus Evolution steel frame is structurally in absolute top condition, perfectly straight, and free of dents, cracks, or distortions. The original Gios Blue paint has a fantastic brilliance and, after a gentle cleaning, was manually conserved with a protective layer of hard wax. The premium Campagnolo components were intensively cleaned in an ultrasonic bath, freshly lubricated, and precisely adjusted. All bearings—including the hubs, bottom bracket, and headset—have been meticulously serviced, repacked with fresh grease, and run silkily smooth with absolutely no play. A mechanically and visually flawless collector's item that is ready to ride immediately.
