Gitane Service Course 1970s – Classic Steel Racing Bike – Reynolds 531 – Eroica Ready
History:
The Gitane brand, founded in 1925 by Marcel Brunelière in Machecoul, represents a defining era of French cycling. In the 1970s, the company achieved an enormous presence by equipping some of the most famous riders in history. In addition to Luis Ocaña, who won the Tour de France on a Gitane in 1973, riders such as Lucien Van Impe, Joop Zoetemelk, and the young Bernard Hinault also raced on these machines. The Service Course model formed the solid basis for competitive use—developed for the demands of ambitious club sports and local races where reliability and performance mattered most. Gitane used experience from the professional peloton to develop frame geometries that proved themselves both in the high mountains and on fast flat stages. A Service Course from this epoch is a direct result of this development and represents classic French frame building before the advent of system integration.
Description:
The frame of this Gitane is based on the Reynolds 531 tubeset made of manganese-molybdenum steel. The 531 is distinguished by its high tensile strength, which made it possible to manufacture stable frames with reduced wall thicknesses. This gives the Service Course its typical ride feel: a balanced mix of agility and the necessary damping for longer distances. The rare gold chrome surface emphasizes the special character of this frame and is a testament to the advanced electroplating technology of the time.
The technical equipment is an example of French lightweight construction of the 70s. The heart of the build is the Huret Jubilee gearing. Introduced for Huret's 50th anniversary, the rear derailleur is still considered one of the lightest mechanical components ever mass-produced. The delicate construction made of polished aluminum is mechanically precise and visually unique. The groupset is complemented by Mafac Competition center-pull brakes, which are designed more stiffly than the standard models, and the classic Stronglight crankset. Combined with Mavic rims, this results in a technically consistent machine that reflects the standard of French racing of that era.
Condition:
Used / Preserved. This Gitane Service Course has been overhauled at Goldensteelcycles with the goal of maximum substance preservation. The Reynolds 531 frame was checked for alignment and structural integrity and is in perfect condition. The extraordinary gold chrome surface shows an authentic, matured patina, which was intentionally preserved as a historical document. To secure this condition for the long term and protect the metal from oxidation, the entire bike was preserved with micro-crystalline wax. This acid-free special wax is used in professional museum conservation to seal surfaces airtight without changing the visual characteristics of the patina. All mechanical components were disassembled, cleaned in an ultrasonic bath, and professionally lubricated for smooth operation. The bike is technically fully functional and ready for use.
