MBK Super Record - Classic Steel Racing Bike - 1980s - Campagnolo Athena
History:
The MBK brand (formerly Motobécane) looks back on a long tradition as one of the largest French bicycle manufacturers. While MBK was primarily known for solid everyday bikes in the 1970s, the brand firmly established itself in the international racing circuit during the 1980s through its collaboration with the Fagor-MBK professional team. The Super Record model marks the French ambition to combine technical innovation with the extremely popular neo-retro design of the time. During this era, MBK experimented intensively with new manufacturing processes to optimize frames for competitive racing. An MBK from this period is not just a piece of sports equipment but a symbol of the transition from classic lugged construction to more modern, flowing frame shapes that perfectly embody the spirit of the late 80s.
Description:
This late 1980s MBK Super Record stands out with its striking pink-to-grey fade paintwork—an absolute classic of that decade. The technical foundation is formed by high-quality Columbus Cromor tubing. Cromor is a specialized 25CrMo4 steel that offers exceptional torsional stiffness due to its double-butting and a specific manufacturing process (seam-brazed and cold-drawn). This makes the frame an ideal platform for powerful riders seeking direct feedback from the road.
The components consist of a complete Campagnolo Athena groupset. The Athena series was Campagnolo's response in the late 80s to the increasing demand for aesthetically pleasing components that translated the functional excellence of the Record group into a polished, fluid design. A technical highlight is the Mavic Open 4 CD rims with their characteristic Couche Dure (CD) coating, which ensures an extremely hard surface and optimized braking flanks. The Cinelli cockpit and the iconic Selle Italia Turbo saddle complete the setup. The result is a harmonious overall image that celebrates the elegance of French frame building and Italian mechanics.
Condition:
Used. This MBK Super Record has undergone an extensive full restoration at Goldensteelcycles. The Columbus Cromor frame has been structurally inspected and is perfectly aligned, free of cracks or dents. All components of the Campagnolo Athena groupset were completely disassembled, deep-cleaned in an ultrasonic bath, and manually polished to a high sheen. All bearing points (bottom bracket, headset, hubs) were professionally overhauled, treated with fresh high-performance grease, and re-adjusted for optimal play. The striking original paintwork was carefully refurbished and protected with a high-quality sealant to preserve the vibrancy of the pink-grey gradient for the long term. All relevant wear parts have been replaced with new, period-correct components, bringing the bike to a like-new technical level.
